With his lack of interest in pursuing his residency or career in surgery further, Dr. Yamanaka decided to attend Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine as a pharmacology student. There, he became involved with his mentor Katsuyuki Miura in the lab under Kenjiro Yamamoto. From Miura, he was taught about conducting experiments and was given the opportunity to perform his own with unexpected results. This initial experiment on the effects of a blood lipid on lowering blood pressure in dogs later became Dr. Yamanaka’s Ph.D. dissertation. Overall, through his first exposure to the scientific process, he immediately was drawn to the field in comparison to the experiences he had in medical school.
